As the day ends and it's time to go off to sleep, I feel free to let my mind speak and so I think... How many of us can really say that our thinking is free of ideas incepted by external forces for their own benefit?
Reminds me of some wise words by Epictetus.. "No man is free who is not a master of himself."
Are you controlling your thoughts, or are your thoughts controlling you?!
Sleep over it and let me know your thoughts!

I think all thoughts are incepted per say. From the time we are born, we are exposed to the world that teaches us about itself. Even our ability to be creative is a cumulative capability of our ancestory, not entirely our own.
ReplyDeleteHowever these thoughts aren't necessarily planted for 'their benefit'. Who benefits from anyone's thoughts is shrouded in complexity of perception of self, past experiences, learnt habits, culture and a million other things that make up who we are. Things that I possibly can't understand or, if I did understand, can't completely describe
Thank you for your sharing your valuable opinion!
DeleteAm glad you pointed out my folly about the incepted ideas ..makes me wonder though.. how can we really think freely then?
Sorry, forgot to write. Who controls who? I and my thoughts are the same.
ReplyDeleteIs it really so? Just try closing your eyes & thinking of the most recent movie you saw. Did your mind wander?
DeleteThat so reminds me of a day that changed my life. It was the first ever lecture I attended for Philosophy. The Professor walked in, introduced himself, and then straight away asked, “Hands up if any of you think”. We all looked puzzled by this apparently silly question and all put our hands up. He then said that the “thinking” he was talking about was not about what we were going to do that day, or what we were going to wear/eat, or where we were going, or personal problems. He carried on reeling out things that we normally think about. As he did so, the entire class ended up putting their hands down. We were all admitting that aside from the obvious day-to-day stuff, we didn’t “think”. He then asked us to try it out that evening. He explained that we should find a quiet space, and think. But, we were not think about our lives - we were just to let our minds wander. He then said that we should try it for 30-60 seconds. We all thought that it would be easy. But, on the next lecture, when he asked how many of us were able to think for 30 seconds clear without day-to-day thoughts crashing in on the time, none of us could put our hands up and say that we succeeded.
